A clean-up is a facial without the massage — and for most people, most months, it is the one worth booking. Here is when each makes sense.
Salon menus list both and price them differently without explaining what you are paying the difference for. It is one step.
A clean-up
Cleanse, scrub, steam, blackhead extraction, pack. About 30 minutes.
That is the whole cycle of getting your skin clean. It is what you want if your skin feels congested, you have a tan line from commuting, or you have an event in two days.
A facial
Everything above, plus a 15-minute face and neck massage before the pack, and usually a richer product range.
The massage is not filler. It is what brings blood to the surface and it is most of the difference in how your skin looks the next morning. It is also most of the reason a facial takes 45 to 60 minutes instead of 30.
Which, how often
A reasonable rhythm for most people:
- Clean-up every 3–4 weeks. Maintenance.
- Facial every 2–3 months. Or before something that matters.
Booking a gold facial monthly is spending money on the wrong thing. A clean-up monthly and a good facial quarterly costs less and does more.
Before an occasion
Two days before. Not the morning of.
Extraction leaves skin slightly red and it settles overnight — the "glow" everybody talks about is day two, not day one. A facial the morning of a wedding is a gamble that has no upside.
What to check, whoever you book with
The product should be sealed when it is opened, and the expiry should be on the tube. At home you can actually watch this happen, which is more than a salon back room offers.
